Hair Bleaching for Asian Hair

East Asian hair contains among the highest concentrations of eumelanin (black pigment) of any hair type in the world. This is why Asian hair can appear so beautifully glossy in its natural state — but it also makes bleaching a multi-stage process that cannot be rushed.

The lightening sequence for Asian hair: black → very dark brown → brown → red-brown → orange → yellow-orange → yellow → pale yellow. To reach a clean blonde or any cool tone (ash, grey, beige), the hair must be lightened past the orange stage — which typically requires at least 1 full bleach session, and sometimes 2, depending on the starting depth and the target result.

The two most common mistakes stylists make with Asian hair: (1) stopping at the orange stage and applying a cool toner that appears correct immediately but fades to brassy yellow within weeks; (2) applying maximum-strength bleach in a single session to force faster results, which causes severe structural damage. Asian hair's coarser shaft actually holds up better to bleaching than fine hair — but once damaged, recovery is slow.

Bond-building treatments (Olaplex, Wellaplex, or similar) are not optional for Asian hair bleaching — they are a professional standard. Any salon offering bleaching services should be using them.
